Literacy Days

As literacy is recognised by everyone as being a vital life skill, at Cornfield we focus on developing our students’ literacy across the curriculum through quality focussed teaching and through two day events where all communication skills are used in exciting and challenging situations.

The students are grouped broadly according to their levels of achievement and the staff focus on improving the functional use of their literacy skills.

Recent Literacy Days have involved the Queens’ Jubilee, the London Olympics, the creation of a student newspaper and a Cornfield CSI event, each of which has involved the students in using a variety of reading skills such as skimming and scanning, reading for accuracy and reading aloud, as well as writing skills such as drafting, note taking, proof-reading and developing written work both in factual and creative applications.
